What do you think would happen if a tiny particle called a magnetic monopole from outer space were captured by the ultra-strong magnetic field in the gigantic ATLAS detector at CERN, Geneva? You don't know? Neither does anyone else! Such an event is theoretically possible, yet astonishingly no scientist at CERN or anywhere else has ever taken the trouble to calculate the risks arising from such an event. The risk, for example, that the monopole could absorb more particles from the Large Hadron Collider and be converted into a persistent and dangerous black hole. This is exactly what happens in my epic multi-volume novel "Time Crystal".

Middle aged Irish schoolteacher Sam Fitzpatrick is visiting CERN with his family when, like a worm emerging from a rotten apple, the black hole burrows its way out of ATLAS and Sam tries to help work-obsessed engineer Danny Schneider and eccentric Chinese-Irish scientist Michael Zhang to prevent the hole hitting the Earth and absorbing it. That is what is shown in the image.

But their struggle fails and the hole absorbs Michael and Sam. A short time later, fragments of blue crystal emerge from the black hole and time stops everywhere in the Universe. Two of the fragments hit the closest person, Danny's pregnant wife Marianne. Each fragment of "time crystal" is surrounded by a little bubble of time. She is alive but the rest of humanity, indeed the rest of our Universe, is frozen and timeless. Crystals are connected together by invisible "negative energy strings" which allow people who are holding them to see and hear each other. Marianne hears Sam speaking to her and he tells her to seek help.

In great pain and fearful for her baby's life, Marianne reaches Sam's step-daughter, insecure fourteen-year-old Irish schoolgirl Catriona. Sam tells Catriona she must collect all the crystals and bring them down a mysterious tunnel. Then, according to Sam, Michael will be able to restart time and save the Universe. But he does not tell her that the tunnel will lead her on a terrifying and dangerous journey back in time to the Big Bang and beyond. Marianne loses her baby and her husband Danny blames Michael, believing him responsible not just for his son's death but for the whole disaster. Catriona begins her journey down the tunnel and Danny follows her, determined to find Michael and kill him in revenge.

Nor does Sam reveal that he is himself outside our Universe, surrounded by arthropod-like creatures called Entroilians. For our Universe is merely one of many "cosmic eggs" lain by Queen Karolinda. When creatures (like Sam and Michael) emerge from these eggs they are transformed into the next Entroilian generation. Michael Zhang has already been transformed by swallowing part of the Egg and the Entroilians believe he is a god.

Sam's most disturbing secret is that the enemies of the Entroilians, the Argolaths, have stolen the Cosmic Egg, and have introduced some of their King's sons into it. These are coming up the Time Tunnel hoping to reach the Earth and mate with human women to produce more god-like creatures similar to Michael.

In the six or so volumes of Time Crystal, Catriona, Marianne and other characters will descend the Time Tunnel, trying to stop Danny from killing anyone who gets in his way, while Sam is ascending the tunnel trying to prevent the aliens (ultimately including Michael himself) from reaching the Earth. These struggles take place against a backdrop of key events in the history of the Universe. Time Crystal includes extracts from Michael's Sacred Book which provides a scientific context for these events.

Meanwhile back on Earth people are trying to cope with the disaster of living in a frozen Universe. Major questions need to be answered. Should the scientists of CERN fuse crystals together to create bigger bubbles or should the ambassadors to the United Nations in Geneva have control, representing their national interests? National rivalries lead to war as politicians struggle to find solutions to global problems.
